Cancellations Due to Bad Weather

Continental Chess Association maintains a policy of never canceling tournaments due to weather. Since beginning operations in 1968, we have upheld this commitment despite significant snowstorms that sometimes resulted in 30-50% entry reductions.

A tournament would only be canceled if it became physically impossible to access the venue. Even then, we attempt to proceed by delaying rounds to allow snow clearing, potentially adjusting time limits, or rescheduling rounds to when roads reopen.

Historical precedent demonstrates this resolve. When the northeast and midwest experienced substantial snowfall one to two days before a February 2010 tournament in Saratoga Springs, NY, roads cleared by event day. Despite this, approximately 20 participants withdrew unnecessarily, as "most roads were clear and vehicles were traveling at normal speeds" when the tournament commenced.
